*Bengaluru, August 24, 2024* — Travelers arriving at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru will now have to shell out more for their cab rides, as the airport authorities have increased the pick-up fares for ride-hailing services like Uber and Ola.
The fare for Uber cabs has seen a significant increase, with the base pick-up cost rising from ₹187 to a range of ₹230 to ₹260. Similarly, Ola customers will now pay a base fare of ₹215, up from the previous rate of ₹187. The hike comes as part of a broader revision in the pricing structure for airport pick-ups, aimed at addressing the increased operational costs and improving the overall passenger experience.
According to airport officials, the decision was made after extensive discussions with the ride-hailing companies and a review of the current market conditions. The increase in fares is attributed to a rise in fuel prices, maintenance costs, and the need to manage the growing demand for cabs at one of India's busiest airports.
"The revised fare structure is intended to ensure a smooth and efficient experience for passengers and drivers alike," a spokesperson for the Bengaluru airport authority said. "We understand that this may impact passengers, but it is necessary to maintain the quality of service and accommodate the increasing operational costs."
The fare hike has sparked mixed reactions from passengers. While some have expressed concerns about the rising cost of travel, others understand the necessity of the increase given the current economic environment.
"I was surprised by the sudden increase, but considering the traffic and the convenience of getting a cab at the airport, I guess it's justified," said Ramesh Kumar, a frequent traveler.
Both Uber and Ola have also issued statements, acknowledging the fare adjustments and assuring customers that they remain committed to providing safe and reliable transportation services.
This price adjustment comes at a time when the transportation industry is undergoing various challenges, including fluctuating fuel prices and increased regulatory scrutiny. Despite the fare hike, Bengaluru airport remains a crucial hub for domestic and international travelers, and the demand for cab services is expected to remain robust.
Passengers planning their trips from KIA are advised to account for the revised fare structure when budgeting their travel expenses.
