Raipur Municipal Corporation Signs MoU with Russia to Introduce Light Metro Train in Raipur, Chhattisgarh
Raipur, Chhattisgarh – August 23, 2024
In a significant step towards modernizing urban transport, the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Russian government to introduce a light metro train system in Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh. The partnership aims to transform the city’s public transportation infrastructure, providing a sustainable and efficient commuting option for its residents.
Details of the MoU
The MoU was signed in a formal ceremony attended by senior officials from both sides, including representatives from the Raipur Municipal Corporation and Russian diplomats. This collaboration marks the first major international partnership in Chhattisgarh's transportation sector, showcasing Raipur's commitment to adopting advanced and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Under the terms of the MoU, Russia will provide technological expertise, supply modern rolling stock, and assist in the development of the metro network. The project will be implemented in phases, with the first phase expected to cover key areas of Raipur, including the central business district, major residential zones, and industrial hubs.
Significance for Raipur
Raipur, one of India's fastest-growing cities, has been grappling with increasing traffic congestion and pollution levels. The introduction of a light metro train system is seen as a game-changer, offering a clean and efficient alternative to the existing road-based transport network. The metro is expected to significantly reduce travel time for daily commuters and help in decongesting the city’s roads.
The proposed metro system will also be integrated with the existing public transport network, including buses and auto-rickshaws, to ensure seamless connectivity for passengers. Additionally, the project is expected to create numerous job opportunities during its construction and operation phases, further boosting the local economy.
Statements from Officials
Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, the Mayor of Raipur, Aijaz Dhebar, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "This partnership with Russia is a historic milestone for Raipur. The introduction of the light metro train will not only revolutionize the way people travel in our city but also contribute to reducing our carbon footprint. We are committed to making Raipur a model city with world-class infrastructure."
Russian officials echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the significance of this collaboration in strengthening Indo-Russian ties. "This project is a testament to the strong and enduring relationship between Russia and India. We are proud to bring our expertise in metro rail technology to Raipur and look forward to a successful implementation," said a spokesperson from the Russian delegation.
Looking Ahead
The Raipur light metro project is expected to kick off in early 2025, with the first phase likely to be operational by 2028. Once completed, the metro system is anticipated to serve thousands of passengers daily, making it a cornerstone of the city’s public transport network.
As Raipur embarks on this ambitious journey, the city is set to join the ranks of Indian metros like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, which have already embraced modern urban rail systems. The success of this project could pave the way for similar initiatives in other cities across Chhattisgarh, further enhancing the state’s infrastructure and connectivity.
