Senior Congress Leader Salman Khurshid Warns of Potential Violent Protests in India Similar to Bangladesh
In a recent statement, senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid has drawn a parallel between the current situation in Bangladesh and a potential future scenario in India, expressing concerns over possible violent protests fueled by fundamentalist elements.
Speaking on the state of affairs in Bangladesh, Khurshid highlighted the alarming influence of fundamentalist groups in the neighboring country, which has led to a rise in attacks on the Hindu community. "Fundamentalists have taken control of Bangladesh. Hindus are being attacked," Khurshid said, indicating a worrying trend that could have repercussions in India as well.
Reflecting on past events in India, Khurshid pointed to the Shaheen Bagh protests as an example of widespread civil demonstrations that, while significant, did not escalate to the levels seen in Bangladesh. "Shaheen Bagh protests inspired similar demonstrations across the country. However, it failed," he remarked, noting that the protests did not achieve their intended goals.
Khurshid emphasized the importance of India’s geographical and social diversity in preventing such widespread unrest. "The spread in our country prevents things from blowing up in the manner they have in Bangladesh," he stated, suggesting that the varied landscape and multifaceted population of India act as a buffer against large-scale violent protests.
He also touched upon the current situation in Kashmir, which has been a focal point of contention and unrest. "Everything may look normal in Kashmir. Everything may look normal here. We may be celebrating the victory, although some people believe that victory or success in 2024 was perhaps only marginal, and a lot more needs to be done," Khurshid commented. This statement underscores the view that while superficial calm may prevail, underlying issues remain unresolved and could potentially lead to future instability.
Salman Khurshid's remarks serve as a cautionary note on the need for vigilance and proactive measures to address and defuse potential sources of conflict, ensuring that India does not follow the path of its eastern neighbor.
