September 17, 2024 | New Delhi — Millions of Jio users across India were left without mobile connectivity today as a major network outage hit the country, causing widespread disruptions. The outage, which began in the early hours of Tuesday morning, affected both voice and data services, leaving many subscribers unable to make calls, send messages, or access the internet.
Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), were flooded with complaints as frustrated users from various cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, expressed their concerns over the sudden loss of service. The hashtag #JioDown quickly started trending, with thousands of tweets from customers looking for updates.
“I was in the middle of an important work call when the network just went down,” said Priya Verma, a software professional in Bengaluru. “I tried restarting my phone and switching to airplane mode, but nothing worked.”
Many businesses, especially those relying on Jio’s network for operations, reported delays in communication, and several online services saw disruptions. Ride-hailing services, food delivery apps, and other gig-based businesses were particularly hard hit.
Reliance Jio, India's largest telecom operator with over 430 million subscribers, acknowledged the issue in a brief statement released around 10 AM. "We are aware of the connectivity issues impacting our users and are working to resolve the issue at the earliest. We apologize for the inconvenience," the statement read.
As of noon, there were reports of partial restoration of services in some regions, but the majority of users remained offline. Jio’s customer service helpline was also reportedly experiencing a surge in calls, making it difficult for users to reach representatives.
The cause of the outage remains unclear, though industry experts speculate that it could be linked to a technical failure in the company's network infrastructure. Some have pointed to a potential fiber optic cable cut or an issue in the core servers. Others are speculating about whether the increased demand on the network, driven by India’s growing digital consumption, played a role in the disruption.
Telecom experts have noted that while outages are rare, the scale and length of this one have raised concerns. “India’s digital ecosystem is heavily reliant on networks like Jio, and any disruption can have a cascading effect,” said Anil Sharma, a telecom analyst. “It’s crucial for companies to ensure their infrastructure is resilient enough to handle these pressures.”
Jio has faced occasional outages in the past, but none as widespread as today’s incident. The company, which revolutionized the telecom sector by offering low-cost data and free voice calls, has a stronghold in both urban and rural India, making the impact of the outage even more pronounced.
Users are eagerly awaiting full service restoration and further communication from Jio regarding the root cause and what steps will be taken to prevent future outages.
As of the latest update, Jio has not provided an estimated time for complete resolution.
