MMRDA Approves India’s First POD Taxi Project by Sai Green Mobility at BKC, Mumbai

Mumbai, 6 September 2024 – The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has given the green light to India’s first-ever POD Taxi project, a revolutionary initiative aimed at transforming urban transportation. This innovative venture, to be executed by Hyderabad-based Sai Green Mobility, is set to debut at the bustling Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. The project is anticipated to be completed in three years.

A Sustainable Leap in Urban Transport

POD taxis, also known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT), are small, driverless electric vehicles designed to provide fast and eco-friendly last-mile connectivity. The BKC region, one of Mumbai's busiest business hubs, will be the first to benefit from this futuristic transit system, which promises to significantly ease traffic congestion while promoting sustainable urban transport.

Affordable, Efficient Commute

The fare for the POD Taxi service is expected to be ₹21 per kilometer, making it a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional modes of transport. With the fare structure designed to encourage frequent use, the POD taxis aim to cater to a wide range of commuters, from daily office-goers to tourists exploring Mumbai’s financial hub.

Completion Timeline and Infrastructure

The project, set to be completed within a span of three years, will involve constructing dedicated elevated tracks across key areas in BKC. These tracks will host the battery-powered POD taxis, providing seamless connectivity within the business district. Each taxi will accommodate up to four passengers and operate autonomously, relying on advanced sensors and artificial intelligence to ensure safety and efficiency.

A Boost to Urban Mobility

Sai Green Mobility, the company spearheading this initiative, has been at the forefront of green technology and sustainable transport solutions. Their collaboration with MMRDA marks a significant milestone in India's urban mobility landscape. Once operational, the POD Taxi system is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in BKC and set a benchmark for future transportation projects in other metropolitan regions of the country.

The project is part of MMRDA’s broader vision of creating a smart, efficient, and green transportation network in Mumbai, aligning with India’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting green urban development.

The Future of Transportation

As Mumbai continues to grapple with traffic challenges, the introduction of POD taxis could be a game-changer, offering a futuristic alternative that blends convenience, speed, and sustainability. With BKC poised to become the model for other parts of the city and nation, this project signifies a major step toward the future of urban mobility in India.
