TMC Targets Renowned Singer Arijit Singh, Accuses Him of 'Selective Criticism'

Kolkata, September 1, 2024 — The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has stirred controversy by targeting celebrated singer Arijit Singh, accusing him of "selective criticism" after he released a new song titled "Aar Kobe," which demands justice for a trainee doctor in Kolkata who was recently assaulted.

Arijit Singh's song "Aar Kobe" has struck a chord with many, addressing the growing concerns over safety and justice for medical professionals in West Bengal. The song quickly went viral, garnering widespread support on social media and among the general public. However, the TMC's reaction has been far from supportive.

Kunal Ghosh, a prominent TMC leader, publicly questioned Singh's motives, implying that the singer was being selective in his activism. "Why didn't Arijit Singh release a similar song demanding justice in the Badlapur case?" Ghosh asked during a press conference, referring to an unrelated incident involving a brutal crime in the city of Badlapur. Ghosh's remarks have sparked debate, with some defending the singer's right to express his concerns on specific issues while others echo Ghosh's criticism.

The controversy has further escalated with renowned playback singer Shreya Ghoshal deciding to postpone her upcoming concert in Kolkata in solidarity with the trainee doctor. Ghoshal, who shares a close friendship with Singh, announced her decision on social media, stating that she could not perform in a city where the safety of medical professionals was in question. Her move has been hailed by many as a bold stand, though it has also attracted criticism from some quarters for allegedly politicizing the issue.

The TMC's criticism of Arijit Singh has drawn mixed reactions. While some supporters of the party agree with Ghosh's comments, others believe that the party is unfairly targeting an artist who is merely exercising his freedom of expression. Political analysts suggest that this controversy could have broader implications, potentially influencing the cultural and political landscape of West Bengal as artists and public figures increasingly become vocal on social issues.

As the debate continues, the spotlight remains on Arijit Singh, whose song "Aar Kobe" has not only sparked a movement for justice but also a heated political discourse. Whether this will lead to tangible change or further division remains to be seen.
