World’s Second-Largest Hospital, Patna Medical College and Hospital, Under Construction in Bihar

Patna, Bihar – September 6, 2024 – The state of Bihar is set to become home to one of the largest healthcare facilities in the world, as the construction of the new Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is underway. Once completed, it will be the second-largest hospital by capacity globally, boasting an impressive 5,462 beds.

This monumental project, which is expected to revolutionize healthcare infrastructure in the region, will have 250 seats for MBBS students and 200 seats for post-graduate (PG) medical courses, making it a hub for both medical education and patient care. The massive undertaking comes at a cost of ₹5,540 crore and is a key initiative by the Bihar government to improve public healthcare services in the state.

Modernizing Healthcare in Bihar

The new PMCH is envisioned to provide state-of-the-art healthcare services to millions of people in Bihar and neighboring states. With its bed capacity nearing 5,500, the hospital aims to address the chronic shortage of medical facilities and personnel in the region. The expansion of the MBBS and PG programs will also help in training the next generation of doctors, nurses, and specialists, tackling the shortage of healthcare workers that has plagued rural and semi-urban areas of India.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who laid the foundation stone of the project, emphasized the importance of the hospital in transforming Bihar into a healthcare hub. "This facility will not only serve the healthcare needs of the people of Bihar but will also cater to patients from surrounding states. We are dedicated to bringing world-class medical treatment to the region," he said at the launch ceremony.

World-Class Infrastructure and Facilities

Once completed, the hospital will be equipped with modern healthcare technology and infrastructure, ranging from advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities to specialized units for various medical conditions. It will include intensive care units (ICUs), a trauma center, and a variety of specialized departments such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, and pediatrics.

The institution will also feature a cutting-edge research center, allowing for innovative medical research and breakthroughs in healthcare. The medical college attached to the hospital will play a key role in training healthcare professionals through rigorous academic programs, bolstered by world-class facilities.

The new PMCH is part of a broader effort to improve healthcare accessibility in Bihar, where many regions struggle with limited medical infrastructure and long waiting times.
