Delhi Police launch probe into stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. Stampede on Saturday night resulted in 18 deaths as thousands of devotees rushed to board trains for the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj. Delays in train departures, sale of 1,500 general tickets every hour may have contributed to the overcrowding and chaos at the station, sources say. An eyewitness recounted that despite repeated announcements urging people to avoid gathering in large numbers, the crowd remained uncontrollable.\”The administration was trying to manage the situation, but people were not listening,\” said an eyewitness, an Indian Air Force sergeant who helped the injured with a friend. \”I have never seen such a massive crowd at the stations, even during festivals,\” said another witness, who helped with the injured and said that even personnel from the administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) struggled to control the surge of people. \”This is being investigated by a high-level committee,\” Northern Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Upadhyay said.
