Girls Will Be Girls won the John Cassavetes Award at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The film won in the category for the best film made on a budget under $1 million. The story centres on Mira, a young girl at a strict boarding school in the Himalayas. Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal are the first Indian actor and producer to win an Independent Spirit Award for the film. The win highlights the increasing global recognition of Indian cinema at one of the most respected independent film awards, says Shuchi Talati, director and writer of Girls Will Be girls. The movie will be premiered on Prime Video India on December 18, 2024, and will be available on Netflix and Amazon Prime for a limited period of time after the award ceremony in New York on November 30.
