India to Slash EV Import Duty to 15% to Attract Global Automakers

India plans to reduce import duties on fully built electric vehicles (EVs) from 70-100% to 15% under a new policy aimed at attracting global automakers like Tesla. To qualify, companies must invest at least $500 million in local manufacturing within three years and achieve a domestic value addition of 50% within five years. The policy allows up to 40,000 EV imports at the reduced duty over five years. While this move supports India’s EV adoption goals, concerns remain over infrastructure and market demand.
