New Canadian PM Mark Carney has signalled a new approach towards India. Carney has said that he is committed towards ‘rebuilding ties with India’ The 59-year-old won the race to replace Justin Trudeau, garnered 85.9 percent votes. The diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Ottawa worsened to all-time low in 2023 September when then Canadian administration under Justin Trudeau had claimed that some Indian citizens had alleged role in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Though Carney had more conciliatory tone for India, he remained very aggressive on the issue of tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump. In his victory speech, Carney didn’t mince words and said that “Americans should make no mistake…in trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”‘Canada will win’, Carney said in his speech to the Canadian Parliament on May 1, 2014.
