Over 300 cats were found crammed into a three-bedroom apartment in the Marvel Bounty Cooperative Housing Society, living in unsanitary conditions. The SPCA issued a 48-hour relocation notice to the residents following an inspection by the Pune Municipal Corporation. The cats will be taken to a shelter in Kharadi at the expense of the two owners. Such cases of animal hoarding have been reported several times in Pune. In 2022, a couple in Kondhwa was found keeping 22 dogs in similar conditions; last year, over 50 dogs and cats were rescued from a fake shelter after being caged and abandoned. In 2023, PFA suggested to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to conduct house checks for people with more than three pets living in apartments to rule out illegal breeding and ensure that the animals are kept in sanitary conditions, said Puneeta Khanna, Pune district president at People for Animals. The growing issue ofAnimal hoarding raises concerns about the welfare of animals and the responsibilities of pet owners.
