Presidents Day is celebrated in the US every year on the third Monday of February to mark the birth anniversaries of the legendary former Presidents of the country. The federal holiday is also dedicated to honoring all former presidents of the nation. However, the origin of this holiday is linked to the birth anniversary of George Washington, the first President of America who served from 1789 to 1797. To begin with the on Washington’s birthday on February 22, was designated by the Congress as a holiday for all federal workers in 1885. This changed after Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill in 1968, which moved a number of federal holidays to Mondays. During debate on the bill, it was proposed that ‘Washington’s Birthday’ be renamed ‘Presidents’ Day’ to honour the birthdays of both Washington (February 22) and Lincoln (February 12). But it was rejected by Congress. Thereafter, every third Monday came to be celebrated as Presidents Day. When is Presidents Day this year? Presidents Day is being celebrated on February 17, 2025 (Monday) this year. While stores and restaurants will remain open, banks, post offices, government offices and stock markets will not.
