Prince Frederik of Luxembourg, son of Prince Robert and Princess Julie of Nassau, passed away on March 1 in Paris at the age of 22. Frederik was diagnosed with POLG mitochondrial disease at age 14 after years of unexplained health struggles. The rare genetic disorder affects the body’s ability to produce energy, leading to organ failure. Despite his diagnosis, Frederik dedicated his life to advocating for research and awareness. \”Even in his last moments, his humour and boundless compassion compelled him to leave us with one last laugh… to cheer us all up,\” Prince Robert said. \”Go outside when the sun is shining,\” he had written in a note on his phone, according to Prince Robert. \”Frederik found the strength and the courage to say goodbye to each of us in turn,\” he said in an emotional statement on the POLG Foundation’s website. \”It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son, The POLG foundation founder and creative director, Frederk,\” said Prince Robert on the foundation’s website.
