Pune Deputy CM Ajit Pawar advised people to refrain from consuming undercooked chicken as a precautionary measure. Pawar was in Pune to attend an event organised for the completion of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)’s 75 years. So far, 208 people have been affected by GBS in the city since Jan 5 and eight people have died due to complications caused by the syndrome. Most of the cases have come from Pune city and nearby areas. Thirty cases havecome from Pimpri Chinchwad, and 10 patients are from other districts. Scores of privately operated reverse osmosis (RO) plants across the state supplied water in unlabelled jars and bottles to tens of thousands of people for years without any government oversight, civic officials revealed this week. Officials noted that these RO plants operated in a regulatory grey area—municipal bodies had no control over them, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates most consumables in India, only inspected packaged drinking water from registered manufacturers.
