State govt had written to the Union ministry of road transport and highways last month, proposing that three more roads in Goa be declared as national highways. The Union ministry has accordingly told state govt that the proposal is being examined based on various criteria. As four-/six-laning work along the national highway is in the final phases, the authorities are looking at other stretches, which could be notified as national highway and could later qualify for funds from the ministry of highways for expansion. Some such bottlenecks remain to be corrected on state highways from Karaswada to Sanquelim to Usgao in North Goa and along Amigos to Bythakol in Ponda, South Goa. By definition, national highways can be declared when the road connects important districts or towns or one state to another. Similarly, state highway stretches qualify to be upgraded to national highways if they see movement of 10,000 passenger car units in a day. Trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles count as three passenger cars.
