The deadly stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that claimed 18 lives was triggered by confusion between two trains. The stampede occurred on Saturday evening as thousands of devotees were traveling to Prayagraj for Maha Kumbh 2025. A witness told PTI, \”There was confusion among passengers regarding train names and platform changes, which ultimately led to the tragedy,\” he said. The preliminary investigation found that an announcement for ‘Prayagraj Special’ at Platform 16 misled passengers waiting for \”Prayagraj Express\” at Platform 14. Compounding the situation, four trains were scheduled that evening, with three facing delays, leading to severe overcrowding, police sources added. The tragedy occurred as devotees traveled to the holy city for the annual festival of Maha kumbh, known as ‘Maha Kumbha’ in Hindi. The memorial will be held on Sunday at 8.30 p.m. at the New Delhi railway station, with a view of 20,000 people expected to attend.
