The New Delhi Railway Station is enforcing strict security protocols, banning unnecessary lingering on the foot overbridge. A Saturday night stampede at the station resulted in 18 deaths, according to police reports. Additional personnel from Delhi Police, RPF, and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been positioned to handle crowds. The fatal stampede occurred at around 10pm when confused passengers, responding to mixed train announcements, rushed towards platform 16 via a narrow staircase. The situation became critical as people moving in opposite directions created a bottleneck, causing people to fall and creating a devastating crush, police said.. Sunday witnessed continued overcrowding, with numerous passengers competing for space on platforms and foot overbridges, a police officer said, adding that regular announcements are being broadcast to direct commuters and prevent panic situations. \”We have set up barricades, intensified patrolling and deployed quick reaction teams to prevent any further incident,\” an officer said. The officer indicated that trains bound for Prayagraj would be under surveillance, with teams monitoring platform occupancy to prevent similar incidents.
