The recent rape and murder horror in Sanapur have sparked renewed calls for the re-establishment of the former police sub-division office in Hampi. Gangavathi MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy addressed this issue on social media soon after the incident. Reddy highlighted that tourist places within the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority (HWHAMA) receive the highest number of foreign tourists in the country. He remarked that the incident occurred following the govt’s removal of the police security arrangements that were in place. The arrangement included a DSP-level officer and 32 police teams with two-wheelers, ensuring round-the-clock surveillance for tourist safety in the HWHAMA area. The Home minister Dr G Parameshwara acknowledged the issue in Bengaluru, noting that such incidents discourage foreign tourists. He announced plans for increased police presence in tourist areas and enhanced security measures. A similar initiative has been noted in the Koppal district, which is located along the Tungabhadra River. The district minister has mandated that the police department investigate the operations of homestays, resorts, and hotels. He indicated that strict actions would be enforced against unauthorised lodging but refrained from elaborating, stating only that some accommodations engaged in illegal practices have been shut down.
