Two young Goan men were among 116 illegal Indian immigrants who were brought back in a US aircraft that landed at the Amritsar airport around 11.30pm. This was the second batch of Indians to be deported and the first instance of Goans being deported in handcuffs with their legs chained during the flight. Goa’s unemployment rate at 8.7% is higher than the national average of 4.1%. An earlier Niti Aayog report said that Goa had an unemployment rate of 10.5% in 2020-21. The Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation released state-wise employment data on Sep 23. The two men were arrested while crossing the US-Mexico border because they did not have the right documentation. They have returned and now they are with their families,” said Goa NRI commissioner Narendra Sawaikar. “Just saying vishwaguru is not enough. Time for govt to study why youths risk their lives to enter illegally in countries like the US. Ensure that other countries treat us with respect,’ said Velim AAP MLA Cruz Silva.
