Uranus became the second planet, after Saturn, known to have such a system. Voyager 2 flyby in 1986 found more. Scientists now know Uranus has at least 13 rings. Unlike Saturn’s bright icy rings, these are dark and difficult to see from Earth. They consist of small, microscopic particles. Before 1977, scientists thought only Saturn had rings. This discovery proved otherwise. Later, faint rings were found around Jupiter and Neptune. Experts now believe planetary rings are common. They may have formed from shattered moons or debris caught in gravity. This accidental discovery reshaped planetary science. Today, astronomers still use stellar occultation to study distant planets. Even the smallest observations can lead to major findings. This zoomed-in image of Uranus, captured by Webb’‘s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) Feb. 6, 2023, reveals stunning views of the planet’s rings. The planet displays a blue hue in this representative-color image, made by combining data from two filters (F140M, F300M) at 1.4 and 3.0 microns, which are shown here as blue and orange, respectively.
