Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat has cancelled the passport of Lalit Modi. Napat said that the fugitive was attempting to avoid his extradition. Modi filed an application with the Indian high commission in London to surrender his Indian passport. He is known to have acquired citizenship of Vanuatu, a South Pacific Island nation. Modi, during his tenure as former vice-president with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was accused of bid-rigging and money laundering, along with contravention of provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA). He fled the country in 2010 and is learnt to have been living in London. The name “Vanuuatu” holds deep cultural significance, translating to “Our Land Forever” in many of the indigenous languages spoken across the islands. The island country offers a citizenship-by-investment programme, allowing foreigners to obtain citizenship in exchange for a financial contribution, typically for around $1,50,000 USD. According to VisaIndex, VanUatu passport holders can travel without a visa to 56 countries, making its citizenship-By-Investment scheme a highly attractive scheme.
