Tension prevailed at the landslide-hit Chooralmala in Wayanad on Sunday morning. Police blocked the landslide disaster victims from crossing the Bailey bridge. This was part of their protest against the delay in rehabilitation and the alleged exclusion of many people from the list of beneficiaries prepared for the rehabilitation of the survivors of the July 2024 disaster. The protesters alleged that the govt was going back on many of the promises it gave to the disaster-affected persons. Later, the protest was called off after discussions between the protesters and the police. Another action committee of disaster victims will hold a fast before the collectorate on February 25, raising various issues, including the demand that houses for the victims should be built on 10 cents of land at Elston Estate, as against the plan of providing five cents for each family at the proposed township.
