CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins promoted the legal fund page for Luigi Mangione, the alleged assassin of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Following online backlash, the news anchor swiftly deleted the post from X. The defence fund website featured a \”Valentine’s Day Message\” from Mangione in which he expressed gratitude for the support he had received. Mangione has been charged with the murder of Thompson, who was shot in the leg and back on 24 November. Reports earlier this week indicated that his defence fund was nearing $500,000. The post was removed shortly after criticism erupted in response to her promotion of the fund, which has since been removed from the X site. The site featured a ‘Valentines Day Message’ in which Mangione said he was ‘overwhelmed’ by the support for him and his legal team. It marked his first public statement since the killing in November, when he was arrested and accused of the killing. He was later found to be in possession of a manifesto condemning the healthcare industry. The manifesto, along with other evidence, has led some to speculate that his alleged motive for the murder was linked to a previous back surgery he had undergone.
