NITI Aayog Report Highlights 42% Growth in Women Borrowers

New Delhi, March 3, 2025: NITI Aayog, in collaboration with TransUnion CIBIL and MicroSave Consulting (MSC), released a report titled “From Borrowers to Builders: Women’s Role in India’s Financial Growth Story.” The report highlights a 42% year-over-year increase in women borrowers, with 27 million women actively monitoring their credit scores as of December 2024.

During the launch, CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam emphasized the role of financial access in empowering women entrepreneurs, urging financial institutions to design inclusive products. The Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) and Financing Women Collaborative (FWC) are working towards fostering financial literacy and market linkages.

Key findings include:
🔹 Women’s share of self-monitoring borrowers rose to 19.43% in December 2024 from 17.89% in 2023.
🔹 Non-metro regions saw a higher growth rate (48%) compared to metro areas (30%).
🔹 Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana accounted for nearly 49% of self-monitoring women borrowers.
🔹 Business loan origination among women rose by 14% since 2019, while their share in gold loans increased by 6%.

Despite these gains, challenges such as credit aversion, poor banking experiences, and collateral barriers persist. The report calls for gender-smart financial products to support women’s financial independence and entrepreneurship.
