At least eight workers are trapped after a portion of an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Telangana on Saturday. The tunnel has collapsed over 10 metres and mud has spread over 200 metres, said a senior official. The collapse occurred just four days after construction work had resumed following a long hiatus. The Indian Army has been mobilised to assist in the ongoing rescue operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered all help from the Centre in rescuing the trapped workers and has also asked officials to provide treatment to those who suffered injuries in the collapse. The incident is being investigated by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the National Institute of Water Resources (NEWR) The NDRF has also launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse and is working with the local authorities to try and find out what caused it to happen. It is also working with NEWR to find out if any of the workers were involved in the construction of the tunnel, which was supposed to be the world’s longest of its kind at 44 km.
