“Death toll rises to 18 in Delhi station stampede, including 14 women. Around 15 people were killed and an equal number of persons were injured at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday due to a tragic stampede. The chaos unfolded after a massive crowd gathered following the announcement of a special train for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Within 15-20 minutes, a surge in passengers led to disorder, multiple casualties, and injuries. Eyewitnesses said the situation worsened due to delays in two trains, leading to an unexpected influx of passengers. As people rushed to board, some fainted amid the crush, sparking rumours of a stampede and triggering further panic. The incident was triggered by a Surge in the crowd of passengers waiting to board trains to Praysagraj, where the MahoKumbh is underway, on platforms 14 and 15 of the station. The crowd was beyond the limit, people were gathered at the (foot over) bridge… Such a huge crowd wasn’t expected. I have never seen such a massive crowds at the railway station, even during the festivals. People from the administration and even NDRF personnel were there, but when the crowd exceeded the limit,. it wasn’t possible to control them.”
