Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) health officials have taken strict measures to enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) in the twin cities. During their inspection, they found 38 commercial establishments, including street vendors and pushcarts, selling tobacco products near school premises in Hubballi. These establishments were found selling various tobacco products, including gutka, within the prohibited zones near educational institutions. This action follows the guidelines set forth under the COTPA regulations. The HDMC officials warned of severe consequences, including hefty fines and possible closure of establishments, if the vendors failed to comply with the notices within the stipulated time frame. The initiative is part of HDMC’s broader campaign to create tobacco-free zones around educational institutions and protect students from exposure to tobacco products. According to sources in HDMC, the tobacco vending licence issuance initiative has also garnered significant response, with more than 150 vendors securing licences after fulfilling documentation requirements and adhering to CotPA Act guidelines.
