Mohammad Usman, a resident of Deepa Sarai in Sambhal, vanish….

Mohammad Usman, a resident of Deepa Sarai in Sambhal, vanished in 2012 without a trace. Police received a letter from the home department confirming that Usman was lodged in a jail in Lahore, Pakistan. The revelation left his family in shock and prompted intelligence agencies to investigate whether his disappearance was part of a larger, more sinister network – terrorism. Authorities suspect Usman may have been linked to a terrorist organisation, though no concrete evidence has emerged. The neighbourhood was home to Maulana Asim Umar, also known as Shannu or Sana-ul-Haq, who became the head of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent before being killed in a US-Afghanistan operation in 2019. Umar disappeared in the 1990s, and intelligence reports indicate that 10 to 12 young men have gone missing since — many later surfacing in Pakistan. Meanwhile, police have stepped up surveillance in the entire district, scrutinising travel records and monitoring those who have visited Pakistan in recent years.
