Standard Chartered Bank’s CSR-supported Vision Centre at Revdana in Alibaug is entirely manned by women. Over 50% of the beneficiaries of this project called \”Seeing Is Believing\” are women. The programme primarily focuses on efforts for avoidable blindness in rural areas where women are disadvantaged when it comes to getting health care, including eye screening and checkups. The Centre is proving to be a boon for the women who could have found it very difficult to get their eyes screened and operated for cataract. It was through this initiative that Laxmi Narayan Patil, 85, frail and hard on hearing, was identified with blinding cataracts in both eyes and was referred for immediate surgery. The project also sends its health workers door-to-door to identify eye patients and create awareness about how to keep eyes healthy. It has 630 vision centres across 22 states, including Maharashtra, of which 50% are run by women, says Karuna Bhatia, head, community impact of Standard Chartered bank.
