“The imam was in a car with another person when a vehicle stopped in front of them and blocked their exit. \”Two unknown suspects with covered faces got out of the vehicle and started firing multiple shots,\” police said. \”The motive for the shooting is unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation,\” they said. The imam, who came out as gay in 1996, ran a mosque in Cape Town that was intended to be a safe space for marginalised Muslims. He had previously said that \”the need to be authentic\” was \”greater than the fear to die\” in the face of threats to his life and his family’s safety. He was the subject of a documentary called \”The Radical\”, which was released in 2012. The documentary was based on his life story and featured interviews with his family, friends, colleagues and other people who have been affected by his death. The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association has condemned the shooting and called on the public to come forward with any information about the incident.”
