Scientists are pursuing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the distinctive Savanur betel leaf. However, they face challenges due to insufficient historical records. Horticultural researchers are gathering necessary documentation to support their application. The cultivation of betel leaves inSavanur taluk covers 400 hectares. The product maintains strong domestic demand across Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad, with daily dispatches. \”At least 60 lakh betel Leaves are sold at Savanu APMC every week,\” says Nazier Ahmed Makandar, fourth generation involved in betel Leaf farming in our family. The team’s scientific findings are promising, but historical documentation remains challenging. They are examining old gazetteers and Nawab-era historical records, remaining optimistic about securing the GI tag. They have received better yield and tests, and I am the fourthgeneration involved inbetel leaf farming in my family,\” shared Nazier Ahmad Makandars, a resident ofsavanur.
